Confronting your wealth plateau

This month’s theme is: confrontation.

Alright, let’s get curious about confronting your wealth.

HEALTH
Heroin, carbohydrates, and a monthly salary

Kevin Kermes - X

This quote from Nassim Taleb is definitely a bit of hyperbole. But it’s a great starting point for confronting how we think about wealth.

Most high-achieving professionals I talk with have one thing in common:

An itch for something better.

Whether it be absolute exhaustion from years and years of climbing corporate ladders. Or a professional journey that’s numbed the spirit — the sentiment is still the same.

The job they’ve “peaked” in is no longer serving them.

People work hard to get comfortable. And somewhere along the way they can lose their autonomy, their creativity, and/or their yearning to grow.

And the certainty of a monthly salary can be addicting (in a way). Once you’ve made it to a certain level, you get that little dopamine rush of earning money without too much mental effort.

Most people will choose unhappiness over uncertainty.

Balance your W-2 with something better

There’s an undeniable spark that lights up in people when they begin directing their mental energy away from a job they’ve already succeeded in.

Maybe you’ve seen it in yourself. Or maybe in a spouse or a friend. The full-time, day-job that gave them wealth just isn’t fulfilling their soul like it used to (or maybe it never really did).

Regardless, this email is here to confront that dissonant feeling of being both grateful for success and left wanting something more.

Here’s another way to look at all this:

The usual route

Kevin’s take

Use your head to secure income with a full-time job and then one day you’ll get to fulfill your heart.

Lean into building something where your heart is guiding your head, versus the other way around.

I’ve always felt disconnected from influencers who advise people to quit their jobs to go all-in on a side hustle or self-employment. While the sentiment is arousing, most people have real responsibilities they can’t ignore and the advice doesn’t fit.

Instead, start building something with your heart and see where it takes you.

KEVIN’S RECOMMENDATIONS
More to get curious about

📌 Operating out of faith (instead of fear): How and why do people stop pursuing their dreams? Napoleon Hill uses his book, Outwitting the Devil to interrogate “the devil” to figure out the answer to that question.

📌 Side projects to laugh at and learn from: I’m not a huge Redditor, but this community called /r/somethingimade gives me inspiration and joy at seeing others share their DIY passions. Sometimes a new chapter doesn’t need to generate income (right away). Maybe it can just start as a hobby.

And just like that, another week of learning and growing is over.

Stay tuned for next Saturday when we dive into: confronting your relationships

As always…

I’m in this with you shoulder-to-shoulder,

Kevin
